On September 10, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., West District General Patrol officers responded to a report of a missing adult male in the 300 block of Bridge Lake Drive. The individual had been abducted the previous day.
The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, and in the early morning hours of September 13, 2024, with assistance from the Tactical Support Team (TST), they located a deceased male in a residence on the 100 block of Bristol Avenue. The victim was identified as 22-year-old Zeyad Shammo of Ontario. His family has been notified.
The death is being treated as a homicide. Investigators identified and apprehended two suspects known to the victim, with the assistance of the TST.
Sonny Balemba (26) of Winnipeg has been charged with:
- First Degree Murder
- Kidnapping
- Extortion
Robert James Chaykowski (26) of Winnipeg has been charged with:
- First Degree Murder
- Kidnapping
- Extortion
- Four counts of Failing to Comply with Release Order
Both suspects have been detained in custody. The Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate.
