Homeless shelters given $1.5 million as part of COVID-19 response

The Manitoba government is spending $1.5 million in taxpayer dollars to support the ongoing needs of homeless shelters over the coming winter.

$726,000 will be spent on the continued operation of the isolation space on Sargent Avenue for homeless people who have or are suspected of having COVID-19.

$54,000 will be given to Main Street project for a daytime drop-in program and an additional $228,114 goes to them for 50 overnight shelter beds.

Siloam Mission will receive $150,000 to continue to operate 50 overnight shelter beds.

$360,000 goes to ongoing operations at Salvation Army.

“This investment will help ensure a safe space is available to people who need it, especially in the coming winter months,” said Families Minister Heather Stefanson. “We are pleased to continue our partnership with these important organizations, which have been providing safe, compassionate and much-needed supports and resources during this unprecedented time.”
