Altona Police are concerned over a scam that is targeting residents of their small southern Manitoba community.
Police say that about two weeks ago a resident received an email saying that they had been targeted by a hitman. The email told the victim that if they sent $2500 USD in bitcoins to the sender they would cancel the hit and tell them who had hired them.
Altona Police say that this is a total scam and once any monies were paid all communication would stop.

The scam is specific and originates outside Canada. According to police, the emails contain grammar and several spelling mistakes.
Altona police say that another resident received a similar email except this time it was an “extortion scam”.
The email said that they had a video of the victim watching porn online and performing a “lewd” act. It again demanded payment in bitcoins or threatened to send the video to the victim’s contact list.
Police say that if you receive an email like this to contact them and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. They advise to never respond to these types of emails and do not send money.
