RCMP are investigating a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist on the Trans-Canada Highway just after 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, near Austin, Manitoba.
Police say a 24-year-old male from Brandon was found on the roadway after being struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The vehicle had been travelling eastbound in the left lane when the 54-year-old male driver from Regina suddenly saw the cyclist in the same lane.
Police say the driver stopped at the scene and called emergency services.
The investigation indicates that the lighting conditions were very dark at the time of the collision and the victim was also wearing dark clothing. Police believe these played a factor in the collision. Alcohol and speed have been ruled out as factors.
The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
RCMP continue to investigate.
