High-rise fire raises second alarm for Winnipeg firefighters

Just before 10:00 pm on Friday, January 24, 2020, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a 14 storey highrise on Chesterfield Avenue.

Upon arrival crews found smoke coming from a single third-floor unit. A second alarm was called in to increase the number of firefighters and equipment on scene due to the risks associated with dealing with a high-rise fire.

An offensive attack was launched and the fire was put out by 10:15 pm.

Residents in the building, for the most part, self-evacuated but crews did help several people out of the building.

One person was treated by paramedics on the scene but did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported.

The damage from the blaze was contained to one suite.

Residents were able to wait in transit buses until the building was cleared of smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
