Members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) rescued a dog that had fallen through the ice on the Saskatchewan River on April 10, 2024.
The MFNPS received a distress call from RCMP telecoms about a dog struggling to escape the icy waters. Despite the unavailability of additional resources, the police officers on duty sprang into action. They located the dog approximately 100 feet from the shore, visibly struggling to get out of the water.
With the assistance of two local youths, the officers found a nearby canoe and embarked on a daring rescue mission across the water and ice. Once the dog was safely retrieved, the officers used a thermal heat blanket from their patrol unit to warm the freezing animal.
In a joint effort with The Pas fire department, the dog was then placed in the patrol unit and returned to the detachment. There, it was able to dry off, eat, and rest after its harrowing ordeal.
The MFNPS would like to extend their gratitude to the two young females who assisted in this incident. Their quick thinking and willingness to help played a crucial role in the successful rescue of the dog.
