WINNIPEG WEATHER

Heat advisory issued for southern Manitoba this weekend

The Manitoba government has issued a heat advisory for this weekend and continuing into early next week and is warning about the risk from the effects of heat.

A warm front is pushing into the province from Saskatchewan and will bring temperatures into the mid 30s over the weekend

When temperatures climb to these level so does the risk of heat related illness. Older adults, people with chronic illness and people living alone are at a higher risk, especially if they are living in an urban area or do not have air conditioning. Manitobans are encouraged to check in regularly with vulnerable or isolated community members, friends and family who might be at risk. Others at greater risk include infants and young children, and people who work or exercise in the heat.

You can help prevent heat illness by:

  • drinking plenty of liquids, especially water, before you feel thirsty;
  • avoiding prolonged sun exposure;
  • considering cancelling outdoor activities or rescheduling during cooler times of the day;
  • if working outdoors, taking more breaks and staying well hydrated;
  • wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat;
  • limiting alcohol consumption;
  • blocking sun out during the day at home by closing awnings, curtains or blinds;
  • taking a cool shower or bath; or
  • going to a cool place such as a mall, community centre, public library or place of worship.

Watch for the effects of heat illness such as swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, and the worsening of some health conditions.
Signs of heat stroke, which is a medical emergency, may begin with headache, hot skin, dizziness or confusion. If you recognize any of these symptoms in yourself or others seek immediate help.
