Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living is reporting the death of a woman in her 70s who tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) after passing away. The woman, who was a resident of the Southern Health region, had pre-existing health conditions.
Health officials believe that she was exposed to WNV in the Southern Health region in mid-August.
Cases of humans infected with West Nile Virus first appeared in Manitoba in 2003. There have been nine deaths due to the virus. The last reported death prior to this one was in September 2013.
Risk of West Nile Virus infection exists while mosquitos are active. Once the there is a hard first frost the risk will diminish.
The first case of a person infected with West Nile Virus in 2016 was on August 12.
