The CEO of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, Réal Cloutier told media on Tuesday November 2, 2016 that approximately 1000 patient files had been stolen from a locked office within the Health Sciences Centre.

The files contained personal health information including patient names, birthdates, file numbers and procedures.

The breach happen almost a month ago on October 7, 2016 and according to the WRHA paper billing files went missing from the diagnostic imaging office at HSC.

According to the CEO the files were taken from a secure area of the hospital that can only be accessed by swipe cards.

On Tuesday the WRHA sent out letters to the affected patients and expect a number of questions from concerned individuals.

Cloutier told media that the WRHA is conducting two internal investigations and have also asked Winnipeg Police to investigate. He said that they have also hired an outside security firm with human resource experience to review the incident.

Officials do not know what the motivation was to take the file and would not say if there was a suspect.
