Hazmat incident and vacant house fire keep fire crews busy Friday

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a hazardous material incident Friday afternoon in the 100 block of Sidney Smith Street.

The building had readings of 35 parts per million of ammonia. Crews evacuated the building and then ventilated the structure.

No injuries were reported.

Later that evening, around 8:40 pm, firefighters responded to a fire in a two-storey vacant house in the 300 block of Alfred Street. Flames and smoke were seen coming from the building as emergency crews arrived.

An offensive attack was launched with the fire being declared under control around 9:10 pm.

A search of the house found no one inside. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
