Halloween fatal fire becomes Winnipeg’s 42nd homicide of 2019

On October 31, 2019, emergency crews responded a fire at a home in the 500 block of Prichard Avenue.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence when they arrived and launched an offensive attack.

As firefighters made an initial search of the building they located a 41-year-old male in critical condition. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries on November 5, 2019.

The victim was identified as Douglas Wood from Winnipeg.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit investigated and arrested a 23-year-old female suspect on December 17, 2019.

Police say that although there were indicators they were investigating a homicide they weren’t able to confirm it as one until the arrest.

Police say that the victim and suspect were known to each other and had been socializing at the home when a confrontation occurred.

According to investigators the suspect then started a fire and fled the residence, leaving the victim no way to escape.

Jenna Sereena Kakegamick has been charged for her alleged involvement with Second Degree Murder and Arson with Disregard for Human Life.

She was detained in custody.

The death of Wood makes this the 42nd homicide of 2019 in Winnipeg.
