Gun toting taxi passenger busted during traffic stop

ffencesJust after midnight this morning, January 10, 2018, Winnipeg Police stopped a taxi around Salter Street and Dufferin Avenue.

As officers were talking to the driver of the cab they noticed a bag in the back seat next to a male passenger. The bag seemed to have a firearm sticking out of it. Police arrested the passenger and found a can of bear spray and a .22 calibre sawed-off rifle. Officers also found ammunition.

38-year-old Derrick Scott Coutu has been charged with more than 15 weapons-related offences for his alleged involvement including:

  • Possess Weapon
  • Transport Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regulations
  • Carry Concealed Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
