Time to get rid of unwanted guns during month-long amnesty

If you have an unwanted gun or a gun you just don’t need anymore the province is encouraging you to participate in the gun amnesty.

Throughout the month of June, you can contact local police and make arrangement for officers to pick up unwanted weapons and ammunition and have them disposed of safely.

“The gun amnesty program will help keep Manitobans safer in their homes, and reduce the chances a weapon could be stolen and used in a crime,” said Justice Minister Heather Stefanson.

Although everyone is encouraged to participate, officials say that guns and ammunition should not be dropped off at local police stations due to safety concerns.

“This initiative is designed to enhance public safety and we are looking forward to working with all Manitobans to make it a success,” said Scott Kolody, assistant commissioner, RCMP.

The police will not lay charges against someone turning in a weapon unless it was used to commit a crime or was stolen.

300 weapons and 74 boxes of ammunition were collected during the last gun amnesty.
