Dozens of gravestones tipped over throughout cemetery
Vandals have struck Brookside Cemetery this May long weekend knocking over headstones throughout the serene park-like setting.
It was discovered on Saturday May 20, 2017 by a west end resident who often walks in the cemetery.
John Laporte came across the graves that had had their headstones toppled in a senseless act of vandalism. “There were all kinds of graves pushed up, busted. There was one that was smashed,” he said.
Laporte posted these pictures to his Facebook page and has received dozens of comments condemning this senseless act.
The total number of headstones that were knocked over is not known but several of them broke into multiple pieces. The majority of the damage appears to have been in an older section of the cemetery that is owned by the City of Winnipeg. Total cost to repair and replace the damages markers won’t be known until the city has a chance to review the damage.
Brookside is one of the largest and oldest cemeteries in the city opening in 1878. It is also the location where hundreds of veterans have been laid to rest.
Police say that investigators are looking into the vandalism and desecration of the grave sites.
