A brush fire along the CN Mainline that parallels Wilkes Avenue on Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2018, destroyed a fence around a nearby seniors home.
Fire officials say the fire started around 3:00 pm but crews were able to knock the fire down quickly that was running along the property line of Shaftsbury Retirement Residence and CN’s mainline.
Several other fires were burning along Wilkes west of Shaftsbury up to Fairmont Road
Police closed off traffic in both directions to allow fire crews to extinguish the flames but the road was reopened just after 6:00 pm. Access to Assiniboine Forest was also reopened at that time
Traffic diversion on Sterling Lyon Pkw at Shaftsbury is now over. Assiniboine forest open for pedestrian traffic too. #Traffic #Winnipeg @WinnipegTMC

Over the past several days there have been a number of brush fires in and out of the city. Fire officials warn to be vigilant as conditions are extremely dry and the risk of fire is high.
The city of Winnipeg has banned all fires in the city until further notice. Other areas of the province are also under burn bans. Check with your local authorities before starting any fires.
