Just over two weeks ago, a Manitoba man passed away in the emergency department at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg.
On Friday, January 24, 2025, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara issued a statement to reaffirm the government’s commitment to improving the healthcare system to ensure better outcomes for patients. As part of this commitment, a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death is underway. The findings from this investigation will guide systemic changes aimed at enhancing patient protection across Manitoba according to the province.
Shared Health has provided a preliminary update on the investigation’s status, indicating that it must be conducted carefully and will be informed by the autopsy report from the chief medical examiner. The final autopsy results, including toxicology findings, are expected by the end of next week, and the patient’s family will be notified as soon as the report is ready. The critical incident investigation is expected to conclude at least two weeks after Shared Health receives the autopsy results.
A critical incident investigation aims to determine the facts of the situation and make recommendations for improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The government acknowledges that this patient died without the dignity and compassion every Manitoban deserves at the end of their life. There is a commitment to address this failing and take necessary actions to improve healthcare. The government is working to implement system changes based on the critical incident review process recommendations and looks forward to sharing these changes with the public once they are finalized.
