Gene Bowers Sworn In as Winnipeg’s 19th Police Chief

Gene Bowers officially took the helm of the Winnipeg Police Service today, sworn in as the city’s 19th Chief of Police. The ceremony, held at [Location of ceremony – if specified, otherwise omit], marked the formal commencement of his duties following his announcement on March 7, 2025.

Provincial Court Chief Judge Ryan Rolston administered the Oath of Allegiance and Office, solidifying Chief Bowers’ commitment to serving the citizens of Winnipeg with integrity and leadership.  

“I am deeply honoured to serve as the next Chief of the Winnipeg Police Service and lead the dedicated men and women of our police service,” Chief Bowers stated after taking the oath. “My focus will be on enhancing public safety, supporting our members, and strengthening community relationships.”

A central theme of Chief Bowers’ address was his dedication to reconciliation with Indigenous communities. “I am committed to working closely with Indigenous leaders and community members to promote healing, understanding, and a path toward true reconciliation,” he emphasized. “Meaningful and positive change can only be achieved when we work together in partnership with the communities we have sworn to serve and protect.”

Chief Bowers brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served with the Winnipeg Police Service since 1989. His career encompasses extensive work in Uniform Operations, administrative leadership, and criminal investigations. He is a recipient of the Police Exemplary Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada and the Attorney General of Manitoba’s Excellence in Law Enforcement Award, and holds memberships in prominent policing associations.  

A lifelong Winnipegger and University of Manitoba graduate, Chief Bowers assumes leadership at a crucial juncture for the city, prioritizing public safety, Indigenous reconciliation, community engagement, and the implementation of modern policing strategies.  

Markus Chambers, Chair of the Winnipeg Police Board, offered his congratulations and expressed confidence in Chief Bowers’ leadership. “This is a transformative moment for our city, and we are confident that under Chief Bowers leadership, we will see significant strides in enhancing public safety, while building positive relationships within our community,” Chambers said. “We look forward to supporting you in this vital role as we work together to create a brighter future for all residents.”
