Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called on Tuesday evening, October 20, 2020, to help evacuate a 21-storey building in the first block of Garry Street near Assiniboine Avenue.
The building, known as the Fort Garry Tower, had lost both its primary and secondary power to the building which caused a blackout, loss of heat as well as knocking out the fire alarms and the sprinkler system. The building was deemed temporarily unsafe for occupancy forcing the evacuation.
The City of Winnipeg brought in buses to act as an emergency shelter along with members of the Emergency Social Services (ESS) team to help evacuees find temporary living arrangements until the issues with the building are repaired.
Fire officials on the scene said that about 100 people were evacuated from the building and there were no reported injuries.
It is not know at this time how long repairs will take.
