Winnipeg firefighters battled a major fire at a three storey home on Furby Street early Saturday morning, April 13, 2019.
Crews got the call around 4:00 am and could see flames and heavy smoke billowing out of the structure when they arrived.
The five occupants were able to self-evacuate before firefighters were on scene. Crews did rescue a cat from inside the building.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
Crews initially made an offensive attack but were forced to retreat out of the structure and fight the fire defensively protecting neighbouring homes. They were eventually able to get back inside and knock the fire down. The blaze was declared under control by 5:38 am.
The home suffered significant water, smoke and fire damage.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service investigators will be looking into the cause of the fire.
