Downtown campus to expand
The federal government is joining Red River College (RRC) in putting $95.4 million towards the construction of an innovation centre at the college’s downtown campus.
“This is a major step forward for the future,” said Paul Vogt, president and CEO, RRC. “It represents a modernization and a new approach to teaching and partnerships while still doing what RRC does best – providing job-ready grads to industry and helping drive economic growth.”
The new space would be used to bring industry, students, instructors, researchers and community members together to work on commercialization projects for start-ups and small and medium enterprises.
The plan is for it to also focus on social enterprise and Indigenous entrepreneurship, helping to ensure students are prepared for jobs that seem to have good prospects in the emerging economic climate.
A total of $40.6 million will come from the federal government, and $54.8 million from RRC. The province’s support for the project comes in the form of a loan guarantee for RRC’s investment, helping it get a better interest rate for its project financing.
RRC is now looking for private-sector support for the project, launching a major fundraising campaign to engage the business community, philanthropic leaders, alumni and others to round out what they need to make the project happen.
