Under a new federal/provincial funding agreement the City of Winnipeg will see $53 Million from the feds and $26.5 Million from the province for four transit projects under the Public Transit Fund said MaryAnn Mihychuk, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour.
The city has earmarked the funding to buy new buses and expand bus maintenance space for the repair of older buses.
In the past, the federal government has put up one-third of the funding for provincial infrastructure projects; under the new agreement, it will now cover about half of the cost. The province and municipalities will pay the remainder, each paying 25%, Manitoba Municipal Relations Minister Eileen Clarke said.
The city is not the only beneficiary to the new funding structure. Municipalities throughout the province will see a boost to infrastructure funding including $73 Million from the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund for more than 23 projects.
By working together with municipalities, as well as the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, the Province of Manitoba is identifying infrastructure priorities. Provincial funding of $50,987,000 for these projects will come from the Building Manitoba Fund.
Additional projects under both funds are expected to be prioritized by the province in coming months after an application intake has taken place.
