Province extends freeze to cottage fees in provincial parks

Cottage owners who lease their property from provincial parks will pay the same fees for the next two years after the province extended a freeze on rates they established in 2016.

Cottage service fees cover the cost of garbage removal, road maintenance and snow clearing as well as water and wastewater. Traditionally lease fees are calculated as a percentage of assessed land value but service fees are determined by the cost of delivering the services during the previous season.

“We are continuing to explore the development of a fair and sustainable fee structure, and are working in partnership with cottagers to ensure Manitobans can enjoy their cottages and be able to pass them on to future generations,” said Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires.

Originally the freeze was set to expire in July of 2018 but with the extension cottage owners in provincial parks will continue to pay the same rates they paid in 2017 until 2020.
