Four structure fires on Thursday morning keep firefighters busy

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was busy on Thursday morning, January 27, 2022, as crews responded to four structure fires over a six-hour period.

Elgin Avenue Fire

Minutes after 5:00 am firefighters were called to a fire in a single-storey house in the 1800 block of Elgin Avenue.

Heavy smoke greeted crews as they arrived on scene and an offensive attack was launched. the fire was declared under control at 5:47 am.

One person was evacuated as a precaution from a neighbouring house. No injuries were reported.

The house suffered damage to the attic and parts of the interior. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Simcoe Street Fire

A fire in a single-storey house in the 300 block of Simcoe Street had crews responding at 5:52 am.

Heavy smoke was coming from the residence when crews arrived and an offensive attack was launched. The fire was declared under control at 6:23 am.

Multiple people were able to self-evacuate from the home before crews arrived on the scene.

Paramedics assessed multiple residents at the scene and nine people were taken to hospital including one child in critical condition, four adults in unstable condition and four children in stable condition.

The building suffered extensive damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Young Street Fire

Emergency crews were rolling once again at 8:15 am after a fire was discovered in a one-and-a-half-storey house in the 500 block of Young Street.

Flames were seen coming from the building as firefighters arrived. An offensive attack was initiated but due to fire conditions and damage from a previous fire crews transitioned to a defensive attack. An aerial ladder and handlines were used to battle the blaze.

Although no one is thought to be inside the structure crews were unable to immediately search the building.

Residents in a neighbouring home were evacuated as a precaution.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Selkirk Avenue Fire

A two-storey duplex was responded to at 10:50 am in the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue after smoke was seen coming from the building.

An offensive attack was launched an the fire was declared under control at 11:11 am.

No occupants were found in the building after a search and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
