A Grand Marais business employee was assaulted and threatened with a firearm on Canada Day say RCMP.
Around 11:20 pm on July 1, 2022 police responded to a business on Parkview Avenue after a group of people assaulted an employee and then threatened him and others with a firearm.
The suspects fled the business in a vehicle but soon crashed into a ditch on Parkview Avenue. A bystander at the scene of the crash approached the vehicle and was then assaulted and threatened by the suspects. A second vehicle showed up, picked up the suspects and headed toward Winnipeg.
Police were given a description of the vehicle and licence plate by witnesses and located it southbound on Highway 59. A traffic stop was attempted but the driver of the fleeing vehicle refused to stop. Winnipeg Police were advised and Air-1 was able to track the vehicle to a location in the Maples. Seven people were taken into custody without incident.
The 51-year-old employee of the Grand Marais business suffered serious injuries and is currently in hospital. The bystander who was assaulted at the scene of the collision suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention.
24-year-old Ethan Jones from the RM of Portage la Prairie has been charged for his alleged involvement with Aggravated Assault, two counts of Pointing a Firearm, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, two counts of Uttering Threats, Carrying a Weapon- in Public, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Flight from Police Officer, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Prohibited and Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired.
A 22-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing charges of Aggravated Assault and Assault Causing Bodily Harm.
A 24-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing a charge of Aggravated Assault.
Both were released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in court in Selkirk on September 16, 2022.
A 20-year-old female from the RM of Hanover is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act of Drive Carelessly and Permitting an Unauthorized Person to Drive.
RCMP continue to investigate.
