Four Winnipeg Police Service Officers suffered smoke inhalation after they pulled a suspect out of a burning Sargent Avenue apartment.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service had responded to a structure fire in the building around 9:30 pm and was already on the scene when police arrived. Residents of the two-storey building told police that a male inside the suite where the fire was located might be armed with a weapon. The officers breached a barricaded basement suite where the fire was and found a man in his 60s with a pipe. The suspect complied with order to drop the pipe and was taken into custody.
Firefighters quickly had the fire under control by 9:40 pm.
Four officers were treated by paramedics at the scene. The suspect was taken to the hospital as a precaution and in stable condition. No other injuries were reported
The suspect is facing charges for his alleged involvement with Arson with Disregard for Human Life. He remains in custody.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
