FORMER STUDENT ARRESTED AFTER THREATS MADE AGAINST SCHOOL

Threatening posts to social media prompt arrest

A former student of West Kildonan Collegiate is in custody after he allegedly made threats on Facebook Monday night.

According to the Seven Oaks School Division the posts on social media stated that someone planned on bringing a weapon to the school Tuesday.

School officials say they immediately shared the information with Winnipeg police.

In a letter to parents the school principal outlined what had happened and ensured that the threat was over and that police would be at the school to ensure safety.

To Parents and Guardians of West Kildonan Collegiate:

We want to take this opportunity to share the following information with our school community. During the evening of January 23rd, posts on social media were made referencing a threatened school shooting at West Kildonan Collegiate. The information was shared with Winnipeg Police and a suspect (not a student of West Kildonan Collegiate) was arrested and is in custody for making those threats. The Winnipeg Police including our Community Resource Officer will be on site today to ensure safety. Staff and students will be informed of this information this morning at school.

We take any threat of violence in our school and community seriously and will continue to inform our parents, students and staff of relevant information.

The identity of the suspect has not been released but police did take to social media on Tuesday to remind people that threats on social media are taken seriously and will be investigated
