Former Acadia Junior High teacher facing sexual assault charges

After a five-month investigation, Winnipeg Police Service Child Abuse Unit has charged a 32-year-old male with a number of sexual assault related offences.

In October 2022 a student at Acadia Junior High School told investigators that a teacher had an inappropriate relationship with her for seven months between 2021 and 2022. The student told police that during this time there was sexual communication using social media. The girl also told police that on one occasion the accused had tried to kiss her while she was at school. She pulled away and ran. She was not physically injured during these incidents

On March 4, 2023, Jan Marcopined Laya was charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Sexual Assault
  • Sexual Interference
  • Invitation to Sexual Touching
  • Luring a Person Under 14 years of age by Means of Telecommunication
  • Luring a Person Under 16 years of age by Means of Telecommunication
  • Transmit, Make Available, Distribute or Sell Sexually Explicit Material to a Person Under 16yrs

Laya was released with conditions and is prohibited from contact and communication with anyone under 18.
