Province says floodway may be activated Wednesday evening

Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre issued a statement Tuesday evening, October 8, 2019, that says they may activate the Red River Floodway as early as Wednesday evening.

A weather system is forecast to bring a significant amount of precipitation into the Winnipeg region between Thursday and Saturday.

Although forecasters are calling for up to 20 cm of snow temperatures may hover around 0c and it is possible to get either rain or snow.

Previous heavy rains in September throughout the Red River Basin have set record high river levels for this time of year.

The province says that as river levels increase the floodway may be put into use to lower river levels within the city of Winnipeg.

The floodway operation is dependent on the conditions as the storms develop.
