Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre says that overland flooding continues across parts of southern Manitoba, due to ice in the drainage network or ice jamming on streams.
Water levels and flow rates remain high on most waterways and tributaries as run-off from the spring melt is introduced into the system.
In Winnipeg the Red River is stable at 19 feet at James Avenue as of 1:30 pm. Levels are expected to rise slightly as the crest moves through in the next 24 hours.
Ice jams in Netley Creek north of Winnipeg broke free overnight and water is beginning to recede.
The province is reminding people to be watchful of local waterways, as flood conditions can develop quickly. Ditches and culverts contain fast-moving water which could be hazardous and should be avoided.
Avoid driving through moving water as the water depth can be unpredictable and current can push vehicles off the road. It is strongly advised that people be careful if venturing out onto what may appear to be frozen rivers and lakes, due to potential weak ice conditions.
