FLOOD UPDATE APRIL 2, 2017

Red River levels down from April 1 flood update to 19.08 feet at James Avenue

River levels dropped slightly overnight in Winnipeg but we are not out of the woods yet.

According to the City of Winnipeg the 25 homes that needed protective dikes have completed building them however the city is asking the other 25 property owners that were identified on Thursday to remain on stand-by.

The City replenished its stockpile of sandbags overnight.  Currently, there are 60,000 sandbags available, if required.

Additional precipitation or a change in ice conditions could alter the number of properties at risk. City of Winnipeg staff will continue to monitor river levels.

River levels at James Avenue dropped slightly to 19.08 feet as of 1:30pm Sunday. The Red River is expected to crest April 4th or 5th. It is expected that the Red River will remain at the current level for the next few days.

Depending when the ice runs on the Assiniboine River, a minor increase in water levels may occur at James Avenue.  It is expected that ice will move later tonight or early tomorrow.

Both the Floodway and the Portage Diversion continue operation to reduce the amount of water flowing through Winnipeg along the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

Currently the flow rate in the floodway is 16,663 cfs while in the Portage Diversion it is 5200 cfs .

Overland flooding is still occurring across many areas of southern Manitoba much of it caused by ice jams on rivers and tributaries.

Carman is challenged by ice jamming on the Boyne River and surface run-off impacting some homes.

Netley Creek is running very high as ice jamming on the Red River slows the creek from draining into the river.

Five areas of the province are operating under a state of emergency due to high water levels. The affected communities are  Swan River, Duffrin, Grey, La Broquerie and Two Borders.

Plans continue for the possible use of a ramp on PTH 75 in Morris.  Activity will be based on conditions over the next few days.  At this time, it is expected PTH 75 will remain open. Although in other areas of the province multiple roads have been closed due to flooding.
