WINNIPEG WEATHER

FLOOD UPDATE APRIL 1, 2017

High water levels, overland flooding

Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre says that overland flooding is being reported across much of southern Manitoba as warmer temperatures increase water run-off.

Ice jams on rivers and tributaries are contributing to higher than expected water levels. In Winnipeg the Red River increased 1.2 feet overnight to 19.4 feet at James Avenue. Officials say that levels could drop to 19 feet due to the floodway use but ice on the Assiniboine River could also play a factor and actually slightly increase levels at James Ave.

The City of Winnipeg said in a statement “Given current ice conditions and an observed increase in river levels overnight, City flood planning and operations will be modified today as necessary. The City continues working with affected property owners to provide support to construct sandbag dikes as required.”

On Friday the city reduced the number of homes that would require dikes be built from 50 to 25.

North of Winnipeg the City of Selkirk and the Town of Petersfield are both experiencing flooding due to high water levels. Officials in Petersfield said they believe the flooding issues they are currently experiencing are due in part to ice jams.

Highway 75 south to the border is expected to remain open and the province is constructing a ramp over the northern dike around the town of Morris in order to keep traffic moving.

West of the city the Portage Diversion continues to operate redirecting water from the Assiniboine River towards Lake Manitoba. Flows in the diversion are reported to be 3,132 cfs (89 cms) and flow on the lower Assiniboine River is 5,170 cfs (146 cms).

Much of the snow has already melted in southern Manitoba with the majority of the snow remaining in wooded areas.
