Local flooding closes Selkirk bridge

The city of Selkirk has closed the bridge that links East Selkirk due to localized flooding on Highway 204.

On Tuesday April 9, 2019 the water near the bridge was frozen over but has now released as river levels have increased over the past few days.

Highway 204 regularly floods this time of year and residents of East Selkirk say the loss of the bridge means at least an additional 20 drive to and from Selkirk.

Meanwhile, the Hydrologic Forecast Centre of Manitoba says they are actively monitoring a storm system in the United States that could bring heavy precipitation to Fargo, North Dakota. That precipitation will eventually turn into additional water in the Red River which could bring our expected levels to 2011 or slightly higher.

A flood warning remains in place along the Red River from Emerson to the Red River Floodway. The floodway is still expected to be in operation by early next week.

Crews continue to prepare to close ring dikes should the need arise. Partial dike closures have already begun in Emerson and St. Jean Baptiste. Morris, Letellier, Ste. Agathe and St. Adolphe will see partial ring dike closures in the next few days.
