Fleeing stolen vehicle hits three officers while trying to evade police

Three Winnipeg Police Service officers were hit by a fleeing stolen vehicle as they attempted to arrest the driver on Sunday morning, December 17, 2023.

Police say that around 12:30 a.m. Air 1 was following a stolen vehicle in the Spence neighbourhood while guiding ground units to intercept. As the driver of the vehicle tried to evade officers he was speeding and driving in a dangerous manner while ignoring traffic control devices.

Officers deployed stop sticks which the driver of the stolen vehicle went over and then crashed into a police cruiser. The vehicle stopped in the 100 block of Herman Avenue at which point the driver got out and stole another vehicle. The second vehicle then hit three officers and continued to attempt to flee. One of the officers fired his gun at the vehicle. No one was hit.

Police were able to contain the vehicle in the McAdam Avenue and Aikins Street area. The driver and lone occupant of the stolen vehicle was taken into custody.

The suspect and two officers were taken to hospital, treated and released. A third officer also received injuries but was not treated in hospital.

Jordan Josh Katcheconias, 33,has been charged forhis alleged involvement with:

  • Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon x 3
  • Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 x 2
  • Operation of a Conveyance while Prohibited

He was detained in custody.
