Winnipeg Police were busy with five armed robberies and a serious shooting between the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 14 and Thursday, August 16, 2018, that they say were fueled by drug use.
” This city is facing a lot of crime fueled by drugs and methamphetamine and those drugs and the meth leads people bringing guns and a level of violence that we haven’t seen and the draw on police resources is enormous,” said Rob Carver, Winnipeg Police Service Public Information Officer.
Just after 1:00 am on Tuesday two females robbed a store in the West Alexander neighbourhood. During the robbery one of the females pulled out a long gun and chased customers out of the store as the second female stole various items, police say. Both suspects then fled the store.
Twenty-two hours later, around 11:20 pm, a woman walked into a store in the Weston area armed with a handgun. She robbed an employee of an undisclosed amount of cash the fled on foot.
The next night, August 15, 2018. The same store was robbed again. As happened the night before a lone female entered the store armed with a gun and robbed it.

Police say that another armed robbery happened on Wednesday in the Centennial neighbourhood when a male walked into a restaurant armed with a sawed-off shotgun. Police were able to disarm the man and place him under arrest. Officers say that the suspect appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine.
Armed men, one with a gun the other a knife, also confronted a 16-year-old male in the Fort Rouge area and robbed him of his possessions. They took off in a vehicle but were soon captured by patrol officers.
On Thursday, August 16, 2018, police say that they responded to a shooting on the east side of the city. The male victim was taken to hospital in critical condition. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing by the Major Crimes Unit.
