Firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm shortly after noon on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at a 21-storey high-rise on Smith Street.
When emergency crews arrived they found thick black smoke coming from one of the suites. Crews searched the floor to make sure no one was in danger and found most residents had already self-evacuated. Residents from other floors were able to shelter-in-place. No injuries were reported
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.
Officials say that the sprinklers in the building were activated and were able to contain most of the fire to the suite where it began. Several areas of the building suffered smoke and water damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
