Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires early Monday evening, September 28, 2020.
Crews were called to a fire in a two-and-a-half storey home on Middle Gate around 6:19 pm.
When firefighters arrived on the scene they saw heavy smoke coming from the attic of the home. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was brought under control by 7:13 pm.
Residents in the building were able to self-evacuate before emergency crews arrived. No injuries were reported.
An initial investigation points to the fire being accidental in nature. The fire appears to have involved issues with the wood burning fireplace and chimney.
WFPS reminds homeowners to have wood burning fireplaces, woodstoves, and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional. Fires can occur when stray sparks or high temperatures ignite creosote build-up in a chimney.
Just as crews got the first fire under control a call came in for a second structure fire on Gomez Street.
When crews arrived smoke was seen coming from a commercial building.
The fire was quickly brought under control. Crews set up fans to ventilate the building.
No injuries were reported
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
