Winnipeg firefighters were busy late Christmas Eve into early Christmas morning battling a number of structure fires and an outside fire.
Minutes after 9:30 pm on December 24, 2022, emergency crews were called to a residential fire in a Manitoba Avenue four-plex. Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building as firefighters arrived on the scene. Crews entered the structure and fought the fire for more than an hour before it was declared under control.
Everyone inside the building was able to get out before emergency services arrived. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Around 11:15 pm a fire in a single-family home on Murray Avenue caused extensive damage to an attached garage and the facade of the home. Firefighters battled the blaze from the outside as it was not safe for them to enter the structure.
Everyone inside the home was able to escape safely. The residents in a neighbouring home were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
Fire officials say that the cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature.
At 1:06 am the Winnipeg Fire Department were called to an Austin Street Noth address for the report of a structure fire. When they arrived on the scene they found a small outside fire and quickly put it out. No injuries were reported.
At 4:08 am Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a fire in a six-storey apartment building in the 300 block of Qu’Appelle Avenue. Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building as firefighters arrived on the scene. A second alarm was called in due to the size of the structure and the potential for high-life hazards. The second alarm increases the number of firefighters and equipment on the scene.
Crews fought the fire from inside the structure while other firefighters went suite to suite to ensure everyone was out and evacuated those who needed assistance. Six people were treated by paramedics and transported to the hospital, three in critical condition, one in unstable condition and two in stable condition.
42 people were displaced due to the fire and were helped to find temporary accommodations by Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services Unit.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Firefighters spent 45 minutes knocking down a fire in a two-storey home in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue. The call came in at 5:01 am and when crews arrived on the scene they found thick black smoke coming from the house.
All occupants of the structure were able to safely evacuate. No injuries were reported. One person was helped by the City’s Emergency Social Services Unit to find temporary accommodations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
