Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to three fires on Maryland Street over an 11 hour period between Friday, July 1 into Saturday, July 2, 2022.
First fire
Minutes before 3:00 pm crews responded to a fire in a two-and-a-half storey house in the 500 block. Fire was coming from the balcony on the outside of the house.
Firefighters launched an offensive attack and the fire was declared under control at 3:11 pm
Two people inside the house at the time of the fire were able to get out before emergency crews arrived. No injuries were reported.
Fire officials believe the fire was caused by improper disposal of a cigarette butt.
Second Fire
At 11:00 pm firefighters were called to a two-storey duplex in the 600 block and found smoke coming from the building as they arrived on the scene.
An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control by 11: 20 pm.
Everyone who was in the building at the time of the fire were able to get out prior to firefighter arriving on the scene. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters did rescue a cat from the building and reunited it with their owner.
Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services were called in to help displaced residents find temporary accommodations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Third Fire
At 2:00 am on Saturday, July 2, 2022 firefighters returned to Maryland Street, this time to a fire in a two-storey, multi-family residence under construction in the 300 block.
Smoke and flames were coming from the building as crews arrived and an offensive attack was launched. The fire was declared under control at 2:24 am.
After a search of the structure no occupants were found inside and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
