The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) battled two significant structure fires on the night of Saturday, July 13, and the early hours of Sunday, July 14, 2024.
The first blaze broke out at a single-family bungalow in the 400 block of Young Street. A WFPS crew driving past the building at 7:42 p.m. noticed heavy smoke and flames billowing from the house and promptly reported the fire. Additional crews arrived on the scene and launched an exterior attack on the fire. After knocking down the flames, the crews transitioned to an interior fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 8:13 p.m.
All occupants of the building had safely self-evacuated before the arrival of the crews. There were no reported injuries. However, during a search of the building, firefighters discovered a deceased cat. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and damage estimates are not available at this time.
The second fire occurred at a three-storey apartment building on Ellice Avenue. WFPS crews responded to reports of the fire at 1:39 a.m. on Sunday, July 14. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. They fought the fire from the interior of the building, and the fire was declared under control at 2:27 a.m.
All occupants of the building had safely self-evacuated. There were no reported injuries. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was deployed to assist displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and damage estimates are not available at this time.
