Firefighters battle two evening fires Tuesday

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires on Tuesday evening, March 10, 2020.

Just after 8:00 pm emergency crews responded to a fire in a converted three-storey residence on Burrows Avenue.

As crews arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure.

Although an initial offensive attack was launched inside the building conditions quickly deteriorated and firefighters were forced out. They transitioned to a defensive attack using aerial ladder trucks.

WFPS said that most of the residents had exited the structure before they arrived but firefighters did have to help evacuate several people still inside. Five cats were also rescued and returned to their owners.

No injuries were reported.

The home suffered significant smoke, water and fire damage.

WPFS also responded to a temporary encampment near Henry Avenue and Martha Street where a fire had engulfed several tents and a utility pole.

Crews extinguished the blaze quickly.

No injuries were reported and Winnipeg Police were able to help the people in the tents evacuate.

The cause of both fires are under investigation.
