Crews launched an interior attack on the structure but conditions forced them to transition to an exterior attack. A ladder truck was used to douse the blaze from above.

People inside the home were able to get out before crews arrived and two nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters also rescued several birds from the residence

Temperatures hovered around -15c but felt more like -27c with the windchill while emergency crews worked.

Winnipeg Police shut down Grosvenor Avenue and Stafford Street to traffic in both directions around the fire.

The building is expected to be a total loss after suffering significant damage during the blaze. Officials say a nearby commercial building also suffered water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
