Firefighters battle multiple structure and garbage fires Tuesday

Fire officials are reporting a number of suspicious fires within 90 minutes of each other on Tuesday morning, April 27, 2021.

Crews were called to several garbage bin fires in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street at 5:48 am. The fires were put out quickly.

A little over an hour later firefighters were call to more garbage bins on fire this time in the 400 block of Young Street around 6:54 am.

At 7:10 in the 300 block of Young Street crews battled a blaze in a vacant house and had it under control within ten minutes.

At 8:21 am more garbage bin fires were called in including one that extended to a three-storey apartment building in the 700 block of Sargent Avenue. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control by 8:52 am.

All of the fires are under investigation.

Over the past week firefighters across the city have been battling garbage fires including one that was set on city property right next door to the fire station on Waverley Street.

Fire officials say that residents can reduce the risk of arson around their homes by only putting out your garbage and recycling on your collection day and get rid of yard waste, lumber and bulky waste as soon as possible. It is a good idea to keep all garbage, bulky waste and firewood well away from your house or garage and use motion-activated lights around your property.
