Just before 3:00 am on Friday, May 26, 2023, firefighters were called to fight a significant grass and brush fire beside the rail line running along Sutherland Avenue.
Crews used handlines to fight the fire as the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service drone flew overhead to help direct crews to hotspots. The fire was declared under control at 3:32 am. No injuries were reported
It is believed that a passing train sparked the fire.
Fire officials are also warning residents that conditions over the next several days are expected to be hot, dry and windy. Fires cannot be started in the City of Winnipeg, even with a permit, if wind speeds or gusts exceed 25 km/h. It is likely that the conditions over the weekend will prohibit all fires.
