The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a fire at a vacant, two-storey residence on Pritchard Avenue at approximately 10:37 a.m. today. When crews arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames emanating from the building. Despite their initial efforts to enter the structure, intense fire conditions forced the firefighters to retreat and adopt a defensive strategy, combating the blaze from the exterior.
As of now, firefighting operations are still ongoing. Firefighters are utilizing handlines and aerial ladder trucks to douse the flames, while a WFPS drone is being employed to identify and target hotspots.
The sub-zero temperatures are presenting additional challenges, as the area around the fire scene is coated in ice, creating hazardous conditions. Fire crews are being rotated in and out of action to ensure they get breaks from the cold.
The building in question has suffered significant smoke, fire, and water damage, prompting arrangements for an emergency demolition due to structural concerns. Road closures in the vicinity will remain until the situation is fully resolved.
Residents are urged to exercise caution in the area, as the water used in firefighting efforts has frozen, leading to slippery conditions. City of Winnipeg crews are actively monitoring and treating the roads and sidewalks with sand and de-icing agents to enhance safety.
As a precaution, a neighboring home has been temporarily evacuated. No injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Notably, this same residence was previously damaged in a fire in August 2023.
