On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at approximately 1:25 p.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a fire at a vacant hotel located in the 700 block of Main Street.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke billowing from the building. Due to safety concerns, firefighters commenced a defensive attack from outside, declaring a second alarm to summon additional crews to the scene.
As a precautionary measure, neighbouring buildings were evacuated. A Winnipeg Transit bus provided temporary shelter to displaced residents, while the City’s Emergency Social Services team offered further support. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
WFPS crews utilized aerial ladders to direct water onto the fire and deployed a drone for better situational awareness.
The fire’s cause is currently under investigation, and the building is anticipated to be a total loss. Firefighters are expected to remain on-site throughout the evening. Residents are urged to avoid the area.
Once Main Street re-opens to traffic, caution is advised due to potential slippery conditions from freezing water used in firefighting efforts.
