A Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crew, on their way to another incident, spotted a fire in a three-storey apartment building on Thursday morning, February 16, 2023.

The crew was driving along Sargent Avenue when they spotted smoke and flames coming from the structure in the 700 block. WFPS dispatched a number of additional crews including five engines, three rescue units, two ladders and a squad.

The fire was attacked from inside the building and was declared under control within 20 minutes. The blaze was mostly contained to the suite where it began.

The building did not need to be fully evacuated and many residents sheltered in place. No injuries were reported. Winnipeg Transit provided a bus so those that did leave the building had somewhere warm until they could return to their apartments. One person was displaced by the fire and was given help to find a temporary place to stay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation
