A fire in a Newdale Avenue apartment building sent thick smoke and flames into the air and sent one firefighter to the hospital.

Emergency crews responded to the five-storey structure around 9:41 am on Saturday, April 29, 2023. Firefighters battled the blaze from inside and outside the building declaring it under control within 30 minutes.

Several suites sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Once crews ventilated the building, residents were able to return to the suites that were undamaged.

Several residents were helped by emergency crews to evacuate the apartment building while the remainder were able to safely evacuate on their own.

Paramedics assessed one resident at the scene who did not need to be taken to the hospital. A firefighter was also assessed at the scene and then transported to the hospital in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
