Firefighter injured during Austin Street North fire

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service say that a firefighter was injured while battling a blaze on Austin Street North early Monday morning, July 27, 2020.

Crews were called to a fire in a two-storey home around 12:46 am in the 200 block.

When crews arrived heavy smoke and flames were coming out of the structure. An offensive attack was launched but crews quickly had to transition to a defensive attack due to conditions deteriorating.

Aerial ladders were set up and an exterior attack was launched.

Homes that were situated nearby were evacuated as a precaution as crews worked to ensure fire did not spread to them.

Two people were assessed by paramedics on scene with one of them requiring transport to hospital. The injured firefighter was also taken to hospital in stable condition.

The building suffered significant damage due to water, flame and smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
