Two Firefighters attacked while clearing apartment building

UPDATED

— Two Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) members were attacked while they were going floor to floor clearing an Elgin Avenue Apartment building.

Police say the firefighters had responded to a fire alarm at the building on December 31, 2019, around 11:00 pm. As they were checking each floor and resetting fire alarms they came upon a group of people outside an 8th-floor suite.

One of the individuals attacked one of the firefighters punching him in the face. He then threatened to kill the emergency responders and armed himself with a knife.

Investigators say that a second confrontation occurred and the second firefighter was injured. Firefighters were able to grab hold of the male assailant and hold him for police who arrived moments later.

Both firefighters and the suspect were treated in hospital for injuries they sustained during the fight.

Winnipeg Police have arrested and charged 19-year-old Roy Junior Chief for his alleged involvement. The suspect has been charged with Assault with a Weapon, Assault, Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm, Resist Peace Officer.

He was detained in custody.
