A two-alarm fire at the Salvation Army shelter on Henry Street sent hundreds of people out onto the street after heavy smoke from a working fire filled parts of the six-story building just after 11:00 am on Friday, September 14, 2018.
According to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) 23 vehicles and crews responded to the fire which was quickly knocked down. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze confined to one floor while other crews helped evacuate people from the building.
One firefighter, who suffered non-life threatening injuries, and one other person were taken to hospital from the scene. A number of other people were assessed by paramedics but did not require hospitalization.
By mid-afternoon, most people were able to return to the building after ventilation was completed by emergency crews.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
